The thing I love about this story is the tiny threads of goodness that pervade the moments of darkness. The evil moments are fleeting but every one of them packs a memorable punch… I also think the opening does an excellent job of setting the tone, and serves as a good frame for the bigger (and smaller) story within.
Fantastic story, Ian. You have a way of braiding the complex mix of the good and the evil in humanity into your stories and it makes them strong. Very enjoyable, fast-paced read.
Thank you so much, Lyndsey! That complexity of humans is something I believe strongly in and colors all my work. One of the reasons I became a fantasy fiction writer is because I found it was the best way to explain that principle, through stories like this.
Great story here - the characters are so well written, from the beggar to the silversmith to the main character. Really great job.
Thanks, Keith! It definitely covered more ground than my other stories, so I’m glad it all resonated.
It did, but man you really pulled it off.

Thanks Eric! You were privy to some of the process, so you know how many iterations the intro went through.
